All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Pregnecol / PG600
« on: May 18, 2018, 10:12:12 am »
I can not find PG600.  Might have a lead on some Pregnecol.  Looks promising.  I am thinking 500IU per ewe when the CIDR is pulled.

How important is refrigeration?  We did not use to refrigerate PG600.  Now it is recommended.

Any other thoughts?

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / LAI results
« on: July 27, 2016, 06:44:25 pm »
I use received the results of the LAI from May 25th. We dropped a little from the 90% that we got last fall. We are at exactly 75% from this spring.

If you are in the PNW I would highly recommend Martin Dally from Super Sire Ltd.

Buy and Sell / Registered hamp ram for sale
« on: April 22, 2016, 08:14:38 pm »
We are keeping a maternal brother to this guy that is sired by Apollo so need to make some room.  This is a really nice 2 year old QRNN registered hamp ram.  He makes them thick and fuzzy, just like him.  I have pics of him as a lamb and his registration papers.  I am working on getting some pics of him as a 2 year old.  He is sired from a "Big Bang" buck that comes from Tewalt-Wilsons and the dam is a Livewire ewe from David Boatman.  We have retained some really nice ewes out of this guy and sold some tremendous rams out of him as well.

I know that this guy generates nice thick, big boned, shaggy correct ones!

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / MacLennan and Johnson online ram sales
« on: April 19, 2016, 01:33:13 pm »
After consideration, I am looking at making an impact by purchasing a true stud buck.
I have called a few people that I know and have exhausted my resources trying to find a partner.  Thus, I am turning to this forum to ask the question:

Would anybody like to partner with me on one of the MacLennan bucks or Johnson bucks?  I have two in each sale that I would love to bring home but can only pony up about half of what I am guessing they will go for.  If anybody is interested please give me a call.  I would not need this year, and would like to split early or late with a partner for next year.  I would also like to collect and freeze this year for insurance.  Maybe someone else is in the same boat as me.  It never hurts to ask :)

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / ET vs high dollar ram
« on: April 17, 2016, 12:24:43 pm »
I am looking into improving my flock. What are the opinions of the crowd on the following scenarios:
1. Get a high dollar/quality ram for $7500 and breed 40-50 ewes a year to him
2. Partner w a big breeder on a ewe lamb and flush her for ET?
stuff happens. Either animal could die, but which looks to have the better risk vs. reward?  Admittedly, ET will keep requiring more money with recip ewes and costs of flushing, etc.

Thanks for your input

Just wondering if anyone had kids raise/show their ewe lambs and then return them?  If so, what type of contract do you use?  Thanks

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Gotta love technology!
« on: April 06, 2016, 05:59:02 pm »
Well, technology is great when it works and it stinks when it doesn't.  I missed getting the next bid on the Sermon yearling from Elliott's today.  He may have gone higher after my bid, but I will never know.  I thought that he was a pretty cool sheep.

Well, at least I am not out anything :)

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Ram - Ellerbrocks and Wheatons
« on: March 30, 2016, 12:28:35 pm »
Just curious - what do people see? Which are your favorites?  I am looking to see what others see off the same photos, sort of like the Online Sheep Show.
Here are the sale sites.  http://www.dwlivestock.com/cgi-bin/mndetails.cgi?willoughby773 and http://www.ssponlinesales.com/cgi-bin/mnlist.cgi?ssponline11/category/ALL

Personally, I like lot 5 of Ellerbrock's.  He is jack fronted, clean chested, square-big legged with just enough fur.  I would like to give him a bit more spring of rib.  RR is a plus.  This is a ram that would compliment my sheep well.

From Wheaton's I really like the Barely Legal lot 1.  He has that WOW factor.  For matching with my sheep the only concern that I would have is that I would like a bigger leg.

I would pick the Wheaton sheep as my favorite of the bunch just because of his eye appeal.  Let's just say that either would definitely move my program forward!!!

Nice sheep

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Is it worth it to learn to LAP AI???
« on: February 05, 2016, 11:08:46 am »
I have a question for the group.  I am LAP AIing about 60 of my own ewes a year now and plan to continue this for the considerable future.  Breed 30 in May and 30 in late August.  I currently have about $35-50/ewe into technician fees.  Last year, on Oct. 4th, he had a 90% take rate on 20 ewes bred.

I am looking at cost effectiveness and percentage of ewes getting bred.
Does a person also have to also breed other people's ewes to make it pencil out to get trained and to buy the equipment?

I know that on mylamb.com I read about some people getting trained and saying that they did not think that it was worth it.  I also know that some people LAP AI'd their own ewes and continue to do so.  What are the "X" factors?

What are your thoughts?

Thanks

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Semen tanks
« on: January 19, 2016, 12:56:36 pm »
I need some input.  I am currently paying to have my semen stored.  I am looking at buying a 10L tank that will have to be refilled every 88 days and the cost is $339.  For a 20L tank the cost is $499 and it has to be refilled every 170 days.  The last tank is also 20 Liters and is good for 221 days and has a Low-Level Alarm and the cost is $600.  The number of straws held is not a factor.  I currently have 60 units of Apollo semen.  I am guessing that I will never have over 250 units of semen at one time.

Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / LAI
« on: October 09, 2015, 12:52:56 pm »
On Sunday, we just bred 20 ewes to Apollo with Martin Dally out of Oregon.  It was an awesome experience (hopefully I still say that when I see the conception rate).  I have never even seen LAI done before and was a bit apprehensive about what to expect, let alone if I had my set-up good enough for Mr. Dally.  Everything worked well and I was glad to hear that I followed the directions well.  He told me some horror stories of people who did not withhold feed and water like he tells them to.

Now, I am just keeping my fingers crossed for some super lambs out of Apollo and few remarks with the clean-up ram!

PS- thank you for all of the advice on this site about LAI protocols and your personal experiences.

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Congratulations Shelby
« on: September 16, 2015, 07:39:31 pm »
Well done Shelby on your Reserve Grand FFA lamb.  This lamb was picked over but grew out well.  This was an awesome job for your first time showing.  Also thank you to Maci for putting in many hours helping Shelby perfect her showing techniques.

You girls rock!!!
