All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Re: Lamb Pen
« on: September 23, 2015, 01:05:42 pm »
Don the serious contenders in Oklahoma and Texas have them in some barn situation with fans and light covers. The best I ever saw was at the Cliftons in Kingfisher. They had a garage type barn that the overhead door could be opened in good weather and closed in bad. There were big fans blowing down on each pen. The back side had a show area and treadmill. It was very nice and well thought out.

An easy to make shelter that gives good protection from the elements fairly inexpensively is a 5'X5'X5' box shed.

Those lambs look pretty nice. A track and dog and a little feed management and they would be really good.  :)

I wanted to show the ewe families for our winners. If you notice they all come from the same foundation ewe. Tony Winfrey was not happy she sold for the opening bid on his first online sale. She was a great momma and had a great temperament. We lost her lambing in 2011. As an adult I have only cried over losing a sheep twice. She was the one of them. Two days later a granddaughter won the Jefferson County Livestock show with Mr. Christian judging. The good thing is that she has lambs from her ewe family winning classes in three states for four different breeders.

Every lamb she has had that saw the show ring won Grand Champion at a county show or jackpot.
The one ewe lamb that was not shown raised two grand champion lambs. She has had 4 lambs that she was grand dam to that have won shows now. Well worth the $400 we paid for her in the fall of 2006.

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Re: Feeding Times
« on: September 05, 2015, 12:27:43 pm »
We feed all lambs twice a day. My adults get once per day accept after lambing for the first few weeks, then I feed mommas twice a day. Of course show sheep get two feedings a day.

If you want to copy a successful breeder that built an empire on Composure/Leverage/Trademark genetics, I would look at Leo genetics as an outcross.

For us it has always been what I could get fresh, consistent and have good results. It has always come back to Shotec for us.

Thanks for the replies and insight. We will put the sister in with the nonrelated ram lamb. It will be exciting and scary this season with all new rams to work with. Hamps will be bred to Mas Hombre (Double Stuff X Maximus) and Indian Creek (Sum Buck X WhoDaThunk (Six Bits)). Shrops will be bred to Dr. Feel Good (Mr. Trouble (Cabaniss) X Ebert (Versace)). We will see this Spring how things work out.

Don we always have two rams. I had not thought about the ewe lamb disadvantages. I just know that we have had 3 lambs out of there dam/sire combination and we have had a winning wether, very successful show ewe and a keeper ram. We have a complete out cross ram available and I was originally taking for granted that we would breed to him.

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / What do you think about this breeding?
« on: August 29, 2015, 07:26:51 pm »
We are still about a month away from letting the rams out, but we have been pondering about a full sibling mating. Both are sired by Rex's Shroyer buck Sum Buck and out of a home raised ewe that simply has never missed. We could breed the ewe to a Double Stuff X Maximus ram lamb we have and I would be excited with that. But the concept of the full sibling breeding intrigues me. I don't know there may not be any plusses. But I love how both of these sheep came out and I loved the wether we showed that was the twin to this yearling. What could be the negatives of doing this?

I would say that is a great possibility Don. I joked with my wife that we needed to pick up two of the ewes and one of the rams. I am assuming a huge average on that set of sheep.

I would imagine that if you need rib shape and stoutness that that ram will be a good fit. Double Stuff is so blown apart. His lambs that I have seen and seen pics of have radical rib shape.

I know the sale management is slightly different but they should help you with phone bids. Have bought one over the phone there before.

I have purchased with Android before on both Wiloughby and Hunker. Usually the internet speed has more to do with keeping up on time with the sale than age of device.
