All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Re: CIDR protocol for live cover
« on: September 23, 2018, 06:11:51 pm »
The 5 day pull is during the fall breeding season, when breeding the spring or out of season minimum of 12 days is needed

well I have reduced my flock by about half, and I have a few more ewes to go and some waiting to be picked up. I can see some really good lambs that are tightly bred in fact I bred a ewe back to her sire and produced one of the best looking ewe lambs I had in years, so I am keeping her and maybe have her outbred somewhere

well after some thought I figured that I am spending $420 a month on just hay, next I will include grain for lambs which will run a extra $56 per month and than when lambing starts and I feed some grain to the moms that will run another $36 per month and all that does not include fuel costs and since I don't work I don't count labor, so selling lambs at #50 and up each a year I am lucky to break even, but if I sell my sheep what would I do? be heartbroken for sure

well I couldn't afford to do AI this year but I still hope to next year if I can save up enough, we have 11 lambs right now lost 2 so our fall breeding was around 80% conception which is pretty good for us. thanks for the info guys

Good article and I would look forward to try it, I was one of the AI people would was trained doing the other method in fact I still have all the equipment we had to turn the ewes over on their back in a turn table we bred several ewes or should I say we tried to breed them only on stuck and the lamb was not good I guess they didn't nick. but this way could be real good

out here in Ca. at county fairs we dress in all white  with 4-H hat and tie or scarf now as far as jackpots I see all kinds of dress and a lot of bling belts but I like the ideal of dressing alike when showing looks real good

thanks for the replies  guys , if the lamb goes to our fair I will be helping to feed him because I would be their leader, we have done pretty well with specks in the past that I sold to others 2 Champions and a FFA Champion at Fresno fair but I didn't feed them I would love to see this family do well it would encourage their daughter

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / what do you guys do to keep a lamb fresh?
« on: January 26, 2017, 11:41:13 am »
I have a nice speck lamb born the last of Dec that I want to have shown at our fair is Sept now the family that likes him is worried about keeping him fresh enough I know in the mid west you show older lambs but out here in Ca we show em 6 to 7 months old, also we are in the central valley where it will be 100plus during the summer. I know what I would do but I like to hear from others to see what have worked for them, we have used Og's drench before which I love and works but they didn't want use it last year.

so let me know what to tell them

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / well all my jugs are full
« on: January 10, 2017, 07:43:04 am »
these lambs are coming early, this is what happened last summer. I shattered my knee cap and was laid up from June to Oct so I had my ram in with the girls for breeding for fall lambs and I thought since it was so hot he wouldn't settle anything, he did and I didn't want anyone to mess with the ram and maybe get hurt he stayed in there the whole time. I was a little worried as I never saw a good mark on the ewes in fact I barrowed a ram that I sold to cover them well I was wrong, they are looking good for little guys but staying in the jugs longer because of the weather here tons of rain. hopefully they all sell good and bless the kids that buy them

what I mean is there a company that dos it? I know they do a lot of it in cattle but sheep?

I have been doing my homework before I decide and the cost per ewe to AI is $150 that is semen and tech service next ad in the feed CIDRS  PG600 and other misc. meds as well as travel I think it would be just under $200 per ewe but I am still kicking around the ideal

Honeytree I found a store close to me also thanks for the help, I am guessing you gave shots to your ewes as well? I have never gave prelambing shots of any kind and since is the first time I would take my ewes to get LAI I want to make sure I do that right thing

I want to thank all of you guys for the help and indulging my questions I feel a little foolish since I have raised sheep so long.
