well after some thought I figured that I am spending $420 a month on just hay, next I will include grain for lambs which will run a extra $56 per month and than when lambing starts and I feed some grain to the moms that will run another $36 per month and all that does not include fuel costs and since I don't work I don't count labor, so selling lambs at #50 and up each a year I am lucky to break even, but if I sell my sheep what would I do? be heartbroken for sure

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / what do you guys do to keep a lamb fresh?
« on: January 26, 2017, 11:41:13 am »
I have a nice speck lamb born the last of Dec that I want to have shown at our fair is Sept now the family that likes him is worried about keeping him fresh enough I know in the mid west you show older lambs but out here in Ca we show em 6 to 7 months old, also we are in the central valley where it will be 100plus during the summer. I know what I would do but I like to hear from others to see what have worked for them, we have used Og's drench before which I love and works but they didn't want use it last year.

so let me know what to tell them

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / well all my jugs are full
« on: January 10, 2017, 07:43:04 am »
these lambs are coming early, this is what happened last summer. I shattered my knee cap and was laid up from June to Oct so I had my ram in with the girls for breeding for fall lambs and I thought since it was so hot he wouldn't settle anything, he did and I didn't want anyone to mess with the ram and maybe get hurt he stayed in there the whole time. I was a little worried as I never saw a good mark on the ewes in fact I barrowed a ram that I sold to cover them well I was wrong, they are looking good for little guys but staying in the jugs longer because of the weather here tons of rain. hopefully they all sell good and bless the kids that buy them

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / I am kicking around the ideal of A.I.
« on: December 24, 2016, 08:17:00 am »
I am seriously thinking about it and the benefits I see are

1 introducing new genetics that I couldn't afford any other way

2 not buying another ram when I don't need one

3 possibly getting some real good ewe lambs and a real good ram lamb

4 moving my flock fowrd a little faster

drawbacks are

1. taking a chance on conception rate

2 can I afford it?

3 travel to location I used to not worry about this but ith my health being as bad as it is I kinda to have to

what are your thoughts on it?

What I mean to say is having 2 lambing's in one year, I am thinking about synchronizing all my ewes for fall breeding this next year, I know that they wont all take but some of the will, I have 8 ewes that are on a fall schedule now. I also know that feeding will be a issue, but out here I can sell the fall born lambs a whole lot faster and easier, I will still have spring lambs as all the ewes wont settle in the hotter months

thoughts?

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / looking to buy some ewes
« on: September 20, 2016, 05:09:22 pm »
I have a couple of kids in my 4-H club who wants to start a breeding project and they want some ewes to breed with our ram maybe yearlings and I know their budget isn't to high also they want to show these ewes in next years fair along with the lambs, I would like a couple of ewes as well maybe older ewes. in Calif would be best I know they can be shipped but it costs way to much

12
I was thinking about putting CIDRS in for fall breeding that way all my lambing is done in the spring real fast, now will it be beneficial ? I have only one ram and 20 ewes cost of PG600 and CIDRS having them all lamb out at a certain time would be nice though
