On the third day of Christmas my true love gave to me three camera viewed pens, two lambs a bouncing, and a ewe with a full belly.

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Re: State Fair of Texas

Thank you. We are looking forward to it.  Have been to all the Texas majors but never the State Fair. Glad to hear its been a good experience.  Yes, we always take our own food and drinks....this mom is too cheap to spend $5 for water and $15.00 on burger....we eat a lot of sandwiches at stock shows.  Would rather spend that cash somewhere else!  Looking forward to the next few days and getting to see the sights.

We will be heading out for our first State Fair of Texas lamb show on Monday, October 3-4th.  Hoping for a good show...... any one else been?   Just always like to know if there is anything special to know ahead of time...any comments shared would be appreciated.

We haven't used Heavy Weight but have used Power fuel with excellent results. It's a  small brown pellet and  you mix it with feed. Haven't had any problems with them cleaning it up....have given up to 8-10 o z of Power fuel and they do fine once they get used to it in their feed. We feed textured feed from Purina and they usually don't notice it's in there.  Power fuel is 33% fat I believe.

I don't know about the sullivans product, but there is one called Focus that works well to calm them down. We also use thiamine, 5 cc by mouth, but you do have to have RX for thiamine.  We have used thiamine for shearing and showing, and it has worked wonders on jumpy, excited sheep. It does take about 30-45 minutes to kick in so keep that in mind.

I know in our area it became unavailable...yes, expensive but very effective. Marquis was a great product.  Can others still get it?  It's actually a horse medication so you have to know a sheep and goat vet who understands how it works. Maybe that became a widespread problem.  I know we just couldn't get it anymore the last 2 years.

The powder has a measuring spoon, follow recommended directions and the paste has a "click" on the plunger...make sure you get the one for cattle, goats, lambs...some are for cattle or horses only and don't have a lamb weight. I think it's 5-10 cc for lambs. The really big tubes are cattle or horse only that you buy at Tractor Supply, so just check so you have dosage correct.

We have used it daily, powder in their feed, and some just get the paste.  The powder seems to go further than the paste, and we haven't had any troubles using it.

Yes, swat is awesome for flies off of sores or areas of concern. We also use Pyranah spray for horses....it's great to keep the flies off whole body...and it's lanolin based and doesn't sting or burn.  Use it on our lambs and horses all the time. Also keeps mosquitoes off them.

We did find that the blue colored Mane and Tail (its a different conditioner like deep conditioning) did give a lamb a rash...so we always use the original Mane and Tail.  Also Cowboy Magic is great for the hocks!  For hydration, we use water and Brister lamb drench.  Works great in the Texas  heat.  Had a problem with the lambs feeling "mushy" with electrolytes, but that's just our experience.

Corn huskers and Mane and Tail are two of the best ones we have found. Easy to find..Walmart or the drug stores (Walgreen's ect) and reasonably priced.  Mix with a little water in a spray bottle and you are good to go for about $4.00.

Hey, we are getting ready for our first time to show a lamb at Houston Livestock show. Leaving out tomorrow evening. Just wondering some of the things to go see at the show...your thoughts, your favorites. Just thought it would be fun to share.

4 oz is 12.99....its the concentrated detangler we use.  Works great!

We use it on our border collie who has long hair and gets burrs in her tail and legs...it's great....wash them, rub it in and the burrs slide right off...no tugging or pulling....she loves it especially since I'm not ripping all the hair out of her tail anymore.  Cowboy Magic detangler...worth the price!!

There is a product called Cowboy Magic that works well to get crud and knots, burrs and junk in general out of hocks.  We have used it this year on a couple ewe lambs with "shag" and it works well...you just work into the hocks and use a wool pick or card and doesn't pull out the shag.
