All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Calipyge gene
« on: June 10, 2016, 08:24:55 am »
There has been some discussion on the Calipyge gene on Facebook and I am interested in peoples thoughts and knowledge regarding the subject.  In talking to some of the breeders at Reno some say it is clearly recognizable and judges should see it and place accordingly.  Others say it should only be a factor when judging a breeding class not a market class.  I noticed in one recent on-line sale a southdown buck was tested and found to be Calipyge gene free, however, others are of the opinion that the test is flawed and is not always accurate.

Seems very confusing to me and as usual there are so many different opinions.  What do those of you who are judges have to say?  Breeders?  I have also heard that the meat packing houses like Superior Farms will refuse to take these lambs because the meat is so tough it is all but unedible.  Thoughts, opinions?

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / LAI confused!
« on: May 09, 2016, 12:09:41 pm »
Well I have been agonizing over LAI protocols as no one seems to use the same one. Traditionally using live cover breeding in May, I did a 12 day pull 5 ccs of PG 600 take rate 60 to 70 %. LAI always a 14 day pull 5cc PG600 50% take rate. Last year 12 day pull 1cc lute on day 10 5cc PG 600,  70 percent take rate. Many are now recommending 14 day pull, 1 cc lute day 7 or 8 same PG. some say for get the lute and go back to just 14 day with five. I am so confused!!!

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Pipestone newsletter- scrapie article
« on: July 13, 2015, 08:34:33 am »
Was just reading the new pipestone newsletter and there is lots of excellent info in it this month. A scrapie article caught me eye however. It states that castrated animals under the age of 18 months are exempt from being tagged in the program. Why then are we required to tag all these wethers destined for terminal fairs. Does anyone know??  Not required by the scrapie program.

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / LAI Results & Early Breeding
« on: July 02, 2015, 07:32:51 am »
Will be having our vet out on the 17th to begin the Ultra sound process on 45 of the ladies. We started earlier than ever this year chasing those elusive fall borns with natural cover beginning the second week in May and LAI on the 23rd. We did 26 with fresh chilled and within the 17 remarking period ten had remarked so that leaves a possible 16. Wondering if others have gotten early results back.

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Blue Tongue
« on: June 20, 2015, 09:07:44 pm »
Had my first case of blue tongue this week and last my first ewe. A beautiful two year old. She died in 24 hours. Another one has it but I think banamine, electrolytes, and Benadryl is going to pull her through. Put in new insecticide tags today. Hope it makes a difference. I can't understand why another year has gone by with no vaccine.
