All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Just venting about ear tags
« on: February 04, 2016, 12:24:15 pm »
We are a week to two weeks out from all our major Texas stock shows.  We have validation tags placed in the lambs ears in October.  This week we have had 2 lambs lose their validation tags...pulled them completely out of their ears.  There has to be a better way to do these tags..or do we something wrong....is it just ours losing them?.  They get lose and have worked their way into a sore scab on their ears, then they are irritated and the lambs rub their head on the fence...next thing we know the tags are on the ground and the lamb has a sore ear that's ripped open.  We have put peroxide on them, sprayed them with vetericyn, but we have lambs lose them every year. Next weekend is San Antonio breeding show and I have a validation tag in a ziplock baggie to take with us since her ear is too sore to even try to work tag back into.  It's just frustrating.  thank you for listening.

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Showing Ewe lambs verses wethers
« on: January 14, 2016, 11:23:31 am »
Tomorrow is our county show.  My son shows medium wool lambs.  He has opted to take his two ewes who are going to the San Antonio wether dam show in February.  These girls weigh 124 and 147.  My husband wants him to take his wethers who are weighing 100, 124 and 138.  My son and I feel the ewe lambs are just more complete at this time and will do better for the county show.  My husband the local FFA teacher are convinced that ewe lambs will not outplace the other wethers.  I don't see the difference, except his ewe lambs are just in better overall condition than the wethers  who are heading to Houston and San Antonio. Does anyone have an opinion in general of ewe lambs verses wethers and how they typically place when up against each other.  Just curious of others opinions.  All lambs are Brister breeding and all are very nice.  Just at different stages at this time. Just curious...thanks.

Thank you to who ever posted a while back about the Big Lots Quality Care Disinfectant Spray being the same as Enviro- Sep Disinfectant spray.  Went to the local Big Lots today and bought it for $1.60 a can.  To order Enviro-Sep it's $7.99 plus shipping.  Thanks again for sharing that.

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / ODD BEHAVIOR
« on: January 11, 2016, 07:01:45 am »
Just very odd occurrence last night, then almost comical, but wondering if anyone else deals with this.  We sheared my son's southdown last night for our upcoming county show.  With the temperature getting to 24 degrees last night, we put a cotton sock and lightweight canvas cover on him to keep him from getting chilled.  Apparently he does not like either..as soon as we took off his halter, he immediately began running, looking back like he was trying to get away from the cover. .  Guessing he didn't like the cover touching the back of his leg.  Figured he would get used to it, so we left him alone in his pen and continued to shear others.  After about an hour, the down is still running but in a circle, although he had slowed down.  Anyone else have lambs who run from their covers?  This a.m. after he ate, he started walking in a bigger circle...took off the cotton sock, and left the lightweight canvas on him...I guess he will walk in a circle all day!  He had not been sheared or covered prior to yesterday. I assume he will get used to the cover. His destination is San Angelo in February.

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Houston Stock Show
« on: December 29, 2015, 11:08:15 am »
this will be our first year to go to Houston stock show in March.  Just a couple questions...hotels...good bad and ugly...just opinions.  I was told to stay close and not use shuttle and stay close and not get parking pass since you walk too far either way.
I was looking at schedule....lambs go in 3 a.m. Wednesday.....what do the medium usually show?  Just in general..I know they are usually last show everywhere else so just curious how many days to book hotel...I was thinking Tuesday-Saturday but don't want to overbook if not needed.

We are looking for a full size Australian Shephard puppy in Texas.  Do not want papers or registration, just a pet and herding dog.  If anyone knows of any please let me know.  Thanks in advance.  We are in West Central Texas but will consider traveling for a good dog.

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Starting Top Shelf
« on: August 04, 2015, 12:53:38 pm »
We are looking to start a couple of my son's wethers on Top Shelf.   Have heard and read good things about this supplement.  We are in West Texas, hot hot hot right now( 102-105 each day) and the wethers are tending to scour every time we try and increase feed.  Was wondering everyone's thoughts who have used it.  It is pricey, so just curious.  Both wethers are March-April wethers.  Weighing 78 and 82 lbs, feeding 1 1/2 lbs feed twice a day of purina 15% textured.  Lambs get handful of hay each feeding.  Have given probios powder, treated for coccidiosis with sulfa tablets, given scour halt in case it was feed increases.  So thinking the probiotics and minerals in the Top Shelf might be a good idea to keep them on track.  Thoughts are appreciated from those who have used it.

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Buyer beward...Ebay Veterycin
« on: July 24, 2015, 11:13:46 am »
Just want to share a "buyer beware" with you all.  We have used Ebay for numerous products and supplies, and have always had good luck.  Last week my husband found 4 bottles of Veterycin for a really good price.  Was being sold as "new" and looked good in pictures.  If you use Veterycin you know it is a clear product for wound and topical spray.  Got the 4 bottles in the mail and they were expired and smelled like alcohol.  Veterycin does not have a distinct smell, does not smell like alcohol so I contacted Ebay.  We did receive full refund and threw products in the trash.  Just beware of scammers.  I was taken, and it worked out in the end.  I am just so glad we noticed the dates and did not actually use any of this product of our lambs.  Just always check expiration dates and make sure nothing is fishy with the purchases.
