Humping on Brace
« on: July 17, 2016, 06:11:52 pm »
I have a weather that is developing a hump on the brace as he grows. Hump is hard for son to push it down. The lamb is about 110lbs. Any ideas on what can be change to help correct. Change feed, add supplements, etc.

If it's a lamb roaching it's not due to the feed or any supplements. Some lambs, particularly thick lambs are prone to do this.  Its really a matter of trying different things to see what does and doesn't work. Usually what doesn't work is the classic hard brace technique.  Some things to try

- Over stretch him
- See how he does perfectly square, and then try a moderate brace
- Some lambs refuse to not roach in any position but will show just fine, "down" (like we used to show lambs, no brace just set the lamb up)
- It's usually not as noticeable from the rear so try to brace more when the judge has the rear view than the profile view

If the lamb roaches when it walks around loose, it will always roach when braced, it the lamb walks around level when loose in the pen, then it is a showmanship problem.  Roach in is either poor structure or poor showman, never a feed problem

I never have noticed "particularly  thick" lambs haveing this. But those low chested lambs that do not not have the right neck set , are prone to this. Aas well as short necked lambs, short hipped , short coupled lambs.
Mostly its a shower problem. Use the head to drive the lamb, instead of using a knee into its chest.
Pushing on a lambs chest with a knee, while trying to pull its head off , with your hands, will almost guarantee  this .
And a lot of show people , have this style  down.
The head  and neck should be pushed ,not pulled.
And lamb needs to be trained to drive from the hip and butt.Hump back is bracing with its back, as well as other issues.
genetics  as well in play. And those low fronted, high hipped ones will likley always look this way.
