All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Best way to remove caked on mud?
« on: January 13, 2017, 11:48:24 am »
We've had LOTS of water over the last few weeks and our lambs are MUDDY. I need to get some washed and I was wondering if anyone has used any kinds of soaps, magic potions, etc. to breakdown mud from the wool? Thanks in advance for the help!

We had a ewe lamb that had a similar issue; the vet said to treat her with LA200 (2CC every couple of days). She's fairly normal, has a hard time gett up at times and is a little stiff,  just hasn't really grown well enough even to make her a butcher lamb. Good Luck!

Just wondering what others are using for treatment of barber pole worms in prego ewes? Thanks!

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Re: Rectal Prolapse
« on: June 20, 2016, 12:09:11 pm »
We have had to band prolapses on 3 different occasions; 2 worked and 1 didn't. The easiest way to keep the lamb immobilized is to lay them over a hay bale that is lying on its side. This will also apply pressure so the prolapse will stay out. Make sure you keep the area clean and keep the tube cleaned out so feces doesn't back up (we feel that is what went wrong the 3rd time). On the times that it did work it was great and we didn't have any other issues. It is not an easy job for one person!

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Re: Lambs with fly bites
« on: June 09, 2016, 02:28:04 pm »
Update.....we spray our barn at home and treat for flies but this was happening at the fair. I'm not really if the lambs had bites or if it was an irritation because of the something in the shavings but all of the symptoms went away after being home for a couple of days.

Our lambs just got back from fair and are covered in fly bites. Any idea on the best way to treat them?

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Conditioning hides for show
« on: May 18, 2016, 11:25:49 am »
Just trying to get some feedback on what people are using to keep hides fresh, conditioned, hydrated for show? We've used some show products but have had mixed results and I've been told that some of the products we're using are having the reverse effect. Thanks in advance!

We spray sore mouth with WD-40 it speeds up the process to get the lesions dried out.

She looks great and always catches your eye when you walk in the pen but she's a nutcase!  :o Let's just say that she's not the easiest to show.

Our results were with live cover, not with AI. Last year we didn't keep CIDRs in for as long as year's past; they were pulled from 7-10 days (because of limited jog space while lambing), 5ml of PG at time of removal.

We generally have them cycle after 16-18 days if they don't take the first time. I think we had 2 ewes out of 40 that didn't respond to being synchronized last year.

I know one of my peeves is when children (and sometimes parents) throw a fit as they're leaving the show ring over how the judge placed the class. We're not always happy with the outcome but we don't have to share it with everyone.

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Re: Online sale experience - poll
« on: December 23, 2015, 09:59:49 am »
We've purchased sheep, goats, and cattle from online sales and have always had a positive experience. The only semi-negative experience was purchasing an older bred ewe; she never lambed and was sick from the very beginning. She went to the sale yard but the breeder did send us a ewe lamb to take her place.

Thanks for everyone's recommendations. I'm not sure what the issue was but we lost the ewe lamb last night. I think that there was a deficiency somewhere or she had some other internal issues. Her belly was always full but she didn't grow and started to slowly lose the strength in her legs. We can only stay positive and look forward to new lambs being born in the next couple of days.
