All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / How to lead a lamb
« on: July 06, 2015, 12:26:40 pm »
In response to a question on Facebook I just  made up this quick diagram to demonstrate how a child should position himself to lead a lamb. One of the things we learned at lamb camp this year that we've found really helpful is to position the right hand above the base of the neck rather than at the back of the head. Then, if the lamb need's encouragement, you push the lamb forward, rather than pulling it. This really helps to keep the lamb's head and neck upright. Feel free to pass this image on.

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Is this just asking for trouble?
« on: June 29, 2015, 12:11:46 pm »
I've got a six month old ewe in my keeper pen that isn't prolapsing, but her rectum is rather "loose." It looks about like this most of the time. Am I just asking for trouble keeping this girl? Will she inevitably prolapse when I breed her?

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Track dogs
« on: June 23, 2015, 06:45:06 pm »
Can a dog work as a track dog and a herder? Or does it really require different temperament and/or training? I'd like to get another herder and use it as a track dog as well. Can the two uses be compatible?

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / What looks like acidosis but isn't?
« on: June 22, 2015, 08:48:11 pm »
My ram is severely lame on all four feet and completely off feed. Not drinking much either and nose is really dry. No fever. This started yesterday morning with milder lameness and barely picking at his feed, but has gotten worse tonight to the point that he doesn't want to get up and when I make him, he hobbles around in pain and lays back down. No scours, no real feces of any kind. I did increase his grain slightly before this happen, from 1 lb to 1 1/2 lb, which I didn't think would be enough to cause this severe of a reaction. I treated him tonight with banamine and penicillin and started drenching him with electrolytes to keep him hydrated.

I just don't know if this is acidosis or something else entirely. Does anyone know anything else that can cause severe lameness all the way around and totally off feed?

There apparently was a malfunction on the server, but tech assures me it is now corrected and there should be no more lapses in service.

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Shearing four days before show
« on: June 15, 2015, 03:26:49 pm »
Our fair has a pretty strict rule that kids have to do all their own work at the fair, which is all well and good except when you have a nine year old that needs to slick his own lamb. Therefore, I would like to shear his lambs at home before we take them to the show. The lambs have to be there Monday and they don't show until Thursday. When would be the best time to shear under this scenario and with what blades? I was thinking super surgicals on Monday before we leave? Or would it be better to do it even a couple days earlier than that? Or just stick with the surgicals three prior to the show? Lambs are all pretty good hided.

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Treadmills
« on: June 14, 2015, 09:58:51 am »
I am thinking about trying treadmilling. There are a ton of human treadmills on Craigslist for next to nothing. Can anyone post pictures of how they've converted a human treadmill to work for lambs and share their treadmilling routine? We are looking for muscle definition, not weight control.
