I doubt that 4H would allow it, however, you could probably get around that.  One of the kids could set it up on his/her own and state that all money collected will be donated to the  4H Emerald Star program or to the fair for whatever is needed.

That's horrible!  People can be so cruel!  Maybe start a gofund me account and tell about what happened, perhaps some good-hearted people will help you out and exceed what was stolen.

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Re: Infertile ram
« on: September 01, 2016, 06:10:16 pm »
Crystal, I've experienced the situation at least twice.  The first was from a ram that I purchased in Sedalia.  Had him checked and his semen was not good; mal-formed, broken tails... I contacted the breeder, who was very good and offered a replacement if he didn't get better.  (he did get better after a few months) The other time, the sterility was caused from excessive heat (according to the vet), I contacted the breeder, to let him know about the condition and he sent semen to cover the open ewes.  If it were me, I'd offer a replacement or a credit.  Good luck with him.

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Wheat Germ Oil & Sterility
« on: August 16, 2016, 01:42:48 pm »
I have a heat-sterility issue with my ram.  I've heard that feeding wheat germ oil can help, any recommendations on how much to feed per day?

I've purchased new blades that were so dull they needed sharpening.  I would assume that's the problem with yours.

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Re: Semen tanks
« on: January 20, 2016, 09:20:38 am »
Josh, my tank is MVE Millennium 200, XC20, which I am assuming is a 20 liter tank.  I have to refill it about every 90 days.  Not a big deal if you have a local distributer, but I have to drive about 45 miles one way to have my tank refilled.  If I had known there was a tank that could be refilled every 220 days for only about  $100 more, I would have done it!  It would have saved me time and gas money.  I especially like the fact that the $600 tank has an alarm indicating a low level.  Just my opinion....

Have had both good and bad experiences.  A few years ago I bought 3 aged ewes (1-3years of age) from a "very reputable" breeder, they were not as presented or described, got 1 lamb in the 3 years that I had them - very disappointing.  All are gone now!  This year bought 3 bred ewes from another breeder, very happy with these girls!

I will have lambs for your fair!  I am located in Williams, about 1 1/2 hours south of Redding.  Check out my FB page (Three Sisters Sheep) or my website  www.threesisterssheep.com

Let's say you had the opportunity to purchase semen from any ram currently being offered for $100/straw.   Who would you buy and why?

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Re: Who has lambs and how are they looking?
« on: December 08, 2015, 07:35:06 am »
We have 68 lambs, the most that we've ever had this early.  I think it's the best, most consistent set, wide tops, big butts, eye appeal, bone and shag.  I look forward to seeing how they turn out when shown.

Thanks Crystal, that's what I was thinking, he should out-grow it, but it's something I notice and I'm sure others probably will as well.  I will trim and see what happens.

I have a pretty darn good lamb, that wants to hock in slightly on his left leg.  What is the proper way to trim the hooves to help correct this?

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Strange "defects" in new born lambs
« on: October 28, 2015, 09:33:42 pm »
I've had two lambs born this week that have had severe neck and balance issues.  One would topple forward every time it tried to stand, I tubed in the first 24 hours and it has come around and seems to be fine, other than it does not lay down like a normal lamb, he always looks dead.  The second lamb, born today has the same symptoms, however his neck is cocked up and to the side.  He continues to fall on his side when he walks.  He too has not been able to nurse, so I have been tubing him.  My question is, could this be a nutritional problem or something that happened in utero?  I've never had this type of issue in the past  and it has me baffled.  Any advice is appreciated!

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Foot-Rot/abscess
« on: October 11, 2015, 12:05:36 pm »
I have a bred ewe that is battling what I believe is foot rot, scald, or an abscess, possibly a combo of all three.  I am very familiar with foot rot and scald, as it seems to be an on-going problem with my irrigated pasture, however, I do trim their hooves and run them through a footbath monthly, sometimes more, in addition, I will administer LA200 to those that are bad.  I have one ewe that does not seem to get better, and now she has an open abscess on the bottom of one of her hooves.  I have tried the formaldehyde footbath (at least twice), I've also treated with Kopertox + Nuflor (at least 3 times), currently she is inside the barn, on dry ground.  This has been going on now for about 3 weeks.  Any advice?
