All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Re: Show shakes

Each lamb is different but often they will balk for a few feedings.  Two weeks is definitely not ideal nor does it give you much time to introduce it gradually.

Those of us that can no longer drench have switched to wet feeding a long time ago.  If you have time (don't know how soon your show is), start converting your lambs to being fed with wet feed. Then when it is time to start adding your shake, they will already be accustomed to the wet feed and you can get them to take the shake without using a bottle or drench gun.

Lambie, I'm an ag teacher as well and the wife is a 4th grade teacher. Three kids with different basketball schedules as well.   Sure is nice to be able to check on the girls on my desk computer or on my phone any time any where.  If there are problems,  I can send the boys home from school or my brother who lives around the corner is only a phone call away.

Infrared cameras with one tiny light bulb on in the corner of the barn is a LOT less disturbing than opening the barn door multiple times in the night at my place. Plus, the access on my phone allows us to have a life with our three basketball playing kids and not have to miss games in fear of missing a lambing. Wife left at half time of son's varsity game last winter on an extremely cold night to go help take care of some newborns.  Cameras have reduced some of the worry and stress during our lambing season.

There are cheaper systems out there but I fully recommend foalingcamera.com.  He's got what you need to send the signal from the barn to the house. We've used them for five years now and just added a third camera last month.  Very satisfied with the product and service.

Nuflor for two weeks every other day was advised by a vet for a ram lamb we tested last summer and he came around in time to sire some February lambs.

If and when your lambs ever get it, keep some scabs and freeze them and then you can make your own vaccine when you need it.  Dissolve the scab in sterile water and then use a needle to scrape the solution inside their ear (some guys will poke a hole through the ear).  They usually get a milder form of it and develop the immunity from having it.

I don't have goats but I add 15mg per ewe per day during pregnancy and that is based on Dr. Kennedy's recommendation.  I also do a pound of AS 700 per six head for seven days every month as well.  Along with a vibrio vaccine, It has worked for us.

Sounds like changes were made without thinking things through or maybe there were some miscommunications in not changing all the appropriate info in this year's book.

I see that it is two days this year.  Anyone know which market lambs show which day?

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Re: How do I figure percent protein in feed?
« on: September 23, 2015, 11:00:49 am »
Lol, I guess I'm still old school as I make my students learn how to do it on paper still as well.  It really isn't hard to balance protein once you learn how to use the Pearson square.

If you hand mix and can get it, 1/2 teaspoon per head per day of rumensin has worked for us.

After a summer of hell dealing with fungus after a jackpot show, I'm no longer the believer in Lyme sulphur dip as a preventative as I use to be.
