Tube feeder for sure..having syringes in 3 ml, 6 ml and 12 ml sizes always on hand, plus needles, to me saves me time and frustration. And along with that penicillin, B complex and Banamine, seem to be staples for ill sheep, until I can contact a vet that will tell me to use something else, penicillin so far for me has worked well in 99% of situations I have had.  A thermometer.

Okay, so it WAS Don...well I just wanted to say thanks for the tip, because it worked, and since I had dealt with ketosis before I was much better this time at catching a problem in the very early stages. To say I was pleased and relieved to see her attacking her food as a normal pregnant ewe should is an understatement  :D

I can't remember for sure who recommended Keto gel, but I had a ewe about three weeks out from lambing begin to act dopey, not eating well and just generally depressed. I gave her Keto gel, and B complex shots, and one dose of CMPK drench. I think I treated her four times with the Keto gel, well she came right back, appetite and energy went back to normal and had healthy twins Sunday morning.

We did the same with show lambs on the advice from friends of ours. Bring them home then feed them alfalfa and cob and just let them chill until ready to harvest.

We had in the past few years kept one of the kids show lambs for the freezer. They were good, and would be anywhere from 7 to close to 11 months old. But the kids are grown and last year and this year the lambs we butchered got to laze around, no show feed, supplements, no forced exercise. I fed them alfalfa hay, a feed called sheep and goat DQ I get from TSC mixed with cob, then all cob the last couple of weeks. We really noticed a difference in the meat, and we thought what we ate before was good, so to notice a difference and prefer the lamb that wasn't treated as a show lamb was interesting.

I see. I did a little search yesterday only to find there are people who won't feed new hay and let it sit awhile before using it which was a new one on me. Yeah I usually use up my stash in around 9 months then spot buy until I'm ready to get a stack in, usually July/August.

I am curious about the 90 day curing of alfalfa. I can only guess it depends on where you live? In California I have always fed alfalfa as soon as it's delivered from the field. The only thing I may do different is if I have left over alfalfa from the prior year I'll mix the old and new together for the horse to get him acclimated to it. This year my bale size averaged 127 lbs in a stack of 80 bales.

Taste like a wet ewe smells LOL! Thanks for the laugh ;D
I am going to have them make some then, like you said with a lamb the flavor of the fat shouldn't be a problem, he was a nearly 7 month old ram lamb that didn't grow out like I'd hope he would.

I have had people tell me that lamb sausage is good. We just harvested a lamb this morning and the butcher makes pork sausage but hasn't made lamb. I am curious to try it, any reason not to have them make some, I mean as far as seasonings go would be the same as for pork. They offer a hot or mild. I also did a little searching online and found a few lamb sausage recipes that involve taking ground lamb and mixing in some seasonings, let it sit awhile, and make patties. Just looking for a few ideas for using some ground lamb we have.

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Re: Can sheep get bladder infections?
« on: June 16, 2016, 01:10:51 pm »
I bet they could? And may be urinary calculi or crystals? I used to have a female cat that would get recurring urinary tract infections. Vet told me they can form crystals like males but because of the difference in their anatomy it wasn't as serious as when it happens in the male.
