All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Re: B12
« on: April 11, 2017, 11:35:44 am »
The lamb has a buddy but fed separate and gets some (I don't know the amount) alfalfa at night after its had what it will eat of its grain.  Thank you for your input.  Don I will look for those crumbles and we may have to consider doing the corn with top dress if she won't pick up soon.  Thank you!

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / B12
« on: April 10, 2017, 09:53:17 am »
I am trying to help a kid improve the appetite of her market lamb.  She has been attempting to feed at 3% body weight and the lamb does not finish it and is not gaining.  She is feeding Lamb Slam and adding a probiotic topdress.  Gives new fresh feed every feeding.  Our next move is to try using B12.  I have not used it in a long time and I forget what is recommended for how often to give?  We are using the injectable B12.  Also considering starting OG's drench to help get some calories in to it.

Thanks!

From my experience, once one is overly fat its hard to get them handling "right" again.  We have a ewe lamb on our jackpot string now that has been chubby since the end of May and even with lots of sprinting, high protein supplements, and very little grain she just seems to maintain her very fleshy condition.  Everyone loves her, but we only run her in the breeding classes now as she is way too soggy for the market classes and gets rolled pretty hard in those, but was champion breeding ewe at a show.

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Managing Barn Cough During Show
« on: June 01, 2016, 07:48:45 am »
A kid came to me for some help with their lamb who has been coughing.  To me it appears to be a case of barn cough.  The biggest issue is their market show is in four days so we are well past withdrawal periods.  So looking for ideas on ways to manage the cough leading up to the show as well as in the show ring.  They are keeping the pen free of dust, and cutting out their sprinting.  Other then the cough the lamb is perfectly healthy and looks great.  Thanks for any ideas I can pass along!

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Re: 4U2Win Supplements?

Thanks Don. Yes, I have seen some great testimonials on their products as well, but have never talked with someone who has fed it so wanted to get insight before trying it. We have always done well with a good feed and exercise program, but always working to do better and thought we might give a supplement a try.  Thanks

Welcome!  GC's drench is fantastic.  Finish refers to the fat cover the lamb has.  The basics are that you will evaluate the fat cover over the ribs.  Animals get fat front to back top to bottom.  On a thin lamb you can easily feel the ribs, on an overly fat lamb it feels soft and squishy, and on a well finished lamb it should be smooth but firm.  Listen to the judge at your show and compare your lamb to those at both the top and bottom of the classes this will help you learn what the judge is after as well as helps to start to train your eye to evaluate good lambs and those that could use some improvement.  A great resource for learning to evaluate lamb conformation is the online sheep show.

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / 4U2Win Supplements?
« on: March 17, 2016, 10:51:56 am »
Curious if anyone has fed any of the 4U2Win supplements?  We are considering using their Top Shelf Premix on our jackpot lambs this season, but wanted to know what others who had used it thought of it.
Thanks!

We also bred with NHG last year and used their protocol.  We had great conception rates with the fresh semen, but not with frozen.
