All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Re: Swollen Knees

In this situation I prefer penicillin versus LA200. I think LA200 is more effective for such things as respiratory problems, foot rot, pink eye and other things.

I have had this condition in lambs a few years ago. Usually it is caused from a bacteria infection. Could be from navel ill or other factors for bacteria to enter. An aggressive treatment with antibiotics is the best course of action. The sooner the better for best results.

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Re: when do you guys pull CIDRS?
« on: May 04, 2017, 09:55:13 am »
I have been using CIDRS for over 5 years for fall lambing. I use to leave them in for 10-12 days. But for the past 2 years I have pulled them at 7 days. This is the time line that most research has recommended.

I have had luck with dipping the blades in warm soapy water and an old tooth brush or any type of scrub brush. Told to me years ago by an expert shearer.

We have 52 fall lambs off of our Droppert buck from Loaner. They are looking good.

All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Re: PG600 dosing

We use CIDRS for fall lambing only, so we do a 12 day pull then give 5cc PG600 on 12th day. We use the CIDRS on the blackface ewes and the Dorsets lamb naturally.

Unfortunately I am probably too far from you, in NC. Look up Dorsets and Day lilies on the club lamb page. Kirsten has some good Dorsets

Pipestone newsletter  had a very interesting article on copper poisoning. There are many variables beside feed issues which can lead to or cause copper poisoning. I never thought about copper wire or other potential contaminants. Today was not wasted, I learned something new..ha….ha

Thanks, that is what I am afraid of. He was showing symptoms last night. Gave a shot for snotty nose. Holding his own right now and a little perkier ( is that a word? ha ha)

I am pretty sure it is a copper problem, even though my feeds do not show copper on the label.

I've been raising sheep since late 80's and I have never seen this before. a 6 month old wether has a very snotty nose and eyes are a yellow color. Is that liver failure? I have had adult sheep eat poisonous plants and their eyes and urine turn a chocolate color.
He is on 1/2 show lamb feed( 18% CP and 4% fat) and 1/2 commodity feed pellet ( 15% CP and 3% fat no added copper in feed).
He was eating good yesterday.  Also he is in a dry lot situation.
 Thanks for any input.
