All Sheep and Lamb Discussion / Re: Recurring Choke
« Last post by EmsoffLambs on November 27, 2018, 11:37:41 am »
I have had some choke issues in my sheep in recent years. It almost always is with grain though, not hay. There DOES seem to be some genetic component that I have noticed. One ewe, plus her daughter and granddaughter will all do it. I am not sure if it is a defect in the structure of their throat or if they are all just gluttonous hogs that eat too fast. I have have had a couple sheep over the years that would do it repeatedly on hay and then quit. I suspect in those cases it was caused by an injury to the throat. Maybe from swallowing something too big or sharp? Pipestone has suggested that the puking/cud spilling that can accompany choke may be a vagus nerve issue. I wish I had more answers for you! If they are bolting grain, you can slow them down by wet feeding, but ewes that choke on hay are harder to manage.

I have been having choke issues with several of my ewes.  I didn't have a problem when I was feeding alfalfa cubes but now that I'm feeding alfalfa hay choke seems to be a recurring issue.  The one that seems to have the most trouble never bloats up so I know she's not blocked.  You just hear a lot of hard swallowing.  The last feeding went untouched.  Has anyone else had this type of experience?  If so, did you find a way to resolve it?

The 5 day pull is during the fall breeding season, when breeding the spring or out of season minimum of 12 days is needed

I bred 10 ewes to Fuzz Ball in May.  I'm not sure how many conceived as I haven't had the time to draw blood.  I'm looking forward to see what I get.  I had wanted to breed some ewes to Steel Banana but there was an issue, I don't recall what, so I bred all to Fuzz Ball.  Next May I'll use Steel Banana.

Well, its been a while.
How's everyone been doing?
What kind of results are you having with AI?
As I'd previously mentioned, we're culling our flock hard. We currently only have 19 ewes with 5 ewe lambs that we kept.
We sold everything!
We had two county fair champions from Steel Banana, so we bred/AI'd all 19 to Steel Banana this year.
We've worked with a prominent breeder in our region to lease a cleanup ram with some new genetics.
So, we are excited to see results this January.

Well, there hasn't been much activity here, so I was curious as to what success everyone had with Fuzzball.
From what I've seen, it was hit or miss with him.
We bred with 4 different rams last year.
All of our success came from Steel Banana.
Steel Banana produced 2 county fair champions.
So this year, we have bred all of our ewes to Steel Banana this year.

I was trying to search old messages (I'm not that savvy with these forums).  I think this was covered last year and maybe Don said he had good luck with a 5 day pull?  Just wanting to compare what you all do as far how long you leave CIDRs before you pull them for live cover.
